Erected in 1894-1895, the Falls Bridge connects East Falls and West Fairmount Park. Six previous bridges spanned the Schuylkill River at this location. The first, a chain suspension bridge built in 1808, lasted until 1816 when a heavy snowfall destroyed it.

First up for designation consideration was Falls Bridge, nominated by the East Falls Historical Society. Built in 1894 and designed by George S. Webster, the structure uses a variation of the Pratt Truss called the Baltimore Petite Truss. The Petite Truss is much stronger than a standard Truss bridge due to additional auxiliary sub struts.

Construction on an ADA-accessible boat landing site near the East Falls Bridge on Kelly Drive commenced earlier this month and is scheduled to be complete in late August. The East Falls Development Corporation spearheaded the project with the goal of making the river more accessible to all, said Peg Shaw, a project director at EFDC.

Falls Baptist Church N40°00.554' W075°11.587. Formally constituted in 1838, the foundation for this building was laid in 1851. Prior to that time, the congregation met in private homes and at the Old Academy further uphill. Before the church was built, a number of baptisms took place in the Schuylkill River.
